At TAC Healthcare, we’re always striving to advance diving medicine and safety. Recently, our Medical Director of Diving Services, Phil Bryson, co-authored an important joint position statement on immersion pulmonary oedema (IPO). Published by the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUMS) and the UK Diving Medical Committee (UKDMC), this new guidance outlines best practices for recognising, managing, and preventing IPO - an often under-reported but potentially life-threatening condition for divers, swimmers, and snorkellers.
IPO occurs when fluid builds up in the lungs due to the effects of immersion. Triggers include cold water, exertion, and underlying health issues such as heart or blood pressure problems. Symptoms can appear suddenly, often during or just after a dive or swim, and include difficulty breathing, coughing, and chest tightness.
• Early Recognition Saves Lives: Immediate action - such as ascending safely, administering oxygen, and seeking medical attention is crucial.
• Thorough Medical Evaluation: Anyone who has experienced IPO should undergo a detailed cardiovascular assessment before considering further diving.
• No One-Size-Fits-All Approach: Individual risk factors, including age, existing health conditions, and equipment choices, must be carefully evaluated.
This publication reinforces our commitment to quality care and leadership in diving medicine. You can read the full statement here.
