The theme for World Mental Health Day 2023 is ‘Mental Health is a universal human right’. We are sharing the message that our focus needs to be on good mental health for all, particularly during the cost of living crisis and the extra financial pressures it has brought to many. People spend large amounts of time in the workplace, and for some, this is an ideal place in which to raise awareness, improve knowledge, and create a positive movement and drive change towards the stigmas and struggles that mental health can bring. Just as food and water are everyone’s basic rights, let us push towards improving and protecting everyone’s mental health as a universal human right.
Everyone, whoever and wherever they are, has a right to the highest attainable standard of mental health. This includes the right to be protected from mental health risks, the right to available, accessible, acceptable, and good-quality care, and the right to liberty, independence, and inclusion in the community. We all struggle from time to time; let us normalise this and bring down the barriers of shame that some struggle to overcome. Having a mental health condition should never be a reason to deny a person their human rights or to exclude them in any way, shape, or form.
Mental health affects all levels of society and often leads to people with mental health problems experiencing stigma and discrimination. It is important that we shine a light on mental health, continue to talk about it, take every step we can to look after our own, look out for signs of poor mental health in others, and get help if you or someone you know needs it.
