Frequently Asked Questions
Am I obese?
Find out if you are overweight, underweight or a healthy weight based on your height and age using this calculator. If you are obese (BMI over 30) you qualify for weight loss medication to reduce your risk of disease.
If your BMI came back as 27 you might still qualify for weight loss injections if you are genetically more at risk from obesity disease, for example, a certain ethnicity, have high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, or another weight-related issue such as joint damage.
What if I am a diabetic?
Type 2 diabetics looking to lose weight should book a 30 minute consultation with us to discuss they’re diabetes and desired weight loss goals. There are specific protected medications for diabetes to aid HBA1c control and aid weight loss. We have several experienced clinicians who can manage this. Please call to arrange these appointments being clear that you require diabetic weight management.
Type 1 diabetics and complex type 2 diabetics (on insulin) will be referred to a consultant endocrinologist to maximise their mediation and weight loss.
Why use a weight loss injection?
Diet, ability to exercise and genetics are the complex factors that contribute towards obesity. Injectable weight loss drugs have been proven to be effective on the diet aspect of obesity by releasing hormones that make the body feel full, and/or by releasing insulin.
Combined with a healthy lifestyle and diet, drugs prescribed by a GP can be very effective for weight loss.
What are the risks?
In our experience, patients can encounter mild gastrointestinal symptoms so it’s important to start at a low dose to get your body used to the medication.
Medullary thyroid carcinoma in rats and multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN2) have been found to occur in clinical studies. Pancreatitis is also a risk. You will not be able to have the medication if you have liver or renal disease or if you have severe gastrointestinal disease.
We have seen patients lose weight so rapidly that gallstones are aggravated. Some patients, without nutritional support, forget to drink water and have also aggravated renal stones. Hydration is important when taking these medications.
We do not issue the medication to patients who are hoping to get pregnant as the medication has not been approved for use in those who are trying to conceive, and unfortunately in the UK Type 1 diabetics cannot currently use the weight loss medication.
How long can I use weight loss medication?
At present we are able to issue medication for a total of two years, this is the length of time patients have to reduce their obesity. Most patients lose their excess weight over this time period.
Studies show that 50% more weight loss is achieved if patients have support with changing their diet and lifestyle patterns for good.
Do you put weight on after you stop it?
YES. Once the medication is stopped if no alterations to your eating and snacking habits then the weight will return. For this reason it is advised patients take up the dietary support offered so they can move on with their lives, keeping the excess weight off long term.
How do we prescribe weight loss injections?
After booking your first weight loss appointment you will be sent a questionnaire. Your doctor will meet with you face to face to discuss your answers and go through whether it is right for you. You may be asked to have blood tests and if all is safe you will be issued your medication. We give you verbal and written and dietary support and repeat prescription can be arranged with face to face visits or online via video support or our repeat prescription request page.
